What is Cares?

CARES was born out of a desire to directly place resources in the hands of those that needed them. For our founders, it simply wasn't enough to distribute money through intermediaries without a clear picture of where it was going or what it was truly doing. They wanted tangible results, and our supporters do too.

Cancer Assessment Rapid Early Support (CARES) was set up in 2016 after one of our founding members was diagnosed with and successfully battled cancer. The initial mission was to improve cancer survival rates in East Lancashire by promoting access to early cancer screening.

Labels For CARES

In February 2020 we opened the UKs first designer charity shop in centre of Burnley, selling brands such as Karen Millen, Coast and Temperley and many others. The stock we sell is brand new stock and not second hand and all having labels.

The stock is mainly sample stock from our friends at the Boohoo group, which ordinarily wouldn't be destined for the high street, we've also sourced manufacturers who produce our own licensed Labels label, which means we can adapt to fashion trends, and sell for up to 90% from the original price. We sell these and 100% of the profit goes to fund our charity aims.

Then in June 2021 we opened a second store in the Ribble Valley at the Wellspings Restaurant. As well as our main stores we also have pop-up stores in and around the area.

Events

Twice per year we have a day that celebrates our Charity and our supporters / customers. A day of fun with fizz, fashion, live bands, auctions, raffles and afternoon tea. We've had six events so far, raising over £24k to the overall fund.

ABBA

Every fortnight we go LIVE on Facebook. Born out of lockdown when we couldn't open to the public, we offered a service remotely and sold online. This offered customers great bargains and a bidding frenzy to bag their favourite items.

Results

October 2020 - donated 2 endoscopy machines to Burnley Hospital. Rather than just a cheque, the philosophy the charity is to outright purchase the equipment so that it is directly helping deliver care.

As recently as September 2023 we donated £250,000 to buy the new EUME3 machine. This is an advanced, state of the art, dynastic, endoscopy scope with ultrasound and more advanced technology. It accurately identifies stage cancer and also aids with gaining tissue samples giving diagnoses accuracy and aid to the appropriate surgery and chemotherapeutic intervention.

It is mobile and can be taken into any clinical setting, including surgery.
